NJ Transit Railroad Bridge Painting Project In Rahway
NJ TRANSIT has hired a contractor to paint the railroad bridge at the intersection of New Brunswick and Inman Avenues on the North Jersey Coast Line. The project is scheduled to begin on April 13, 2015 and is anticipated to be completed by June 14, 2015. Please note that rail service will not be affected during this period.
The work comprises, but is not limited to, the installation of a containment system that will cover the bridge to facilitate the removal of the existing lead paint by abrasive blasting, and repainting of the structure. This system is necessary for compliance with federal and state environmental regulations for lead paint removal.
Because of the skewed configuration of the intersection, the contractor has proposed to do the work in four phases that will include temporary traffic detours and partial roadway closings. The containment system will remain erected for each phase.
Concurrently, in order to mitigate the impact on businesses and residents in the vicinity of the project, the contractor, in collaboration with the Rahway Police Department, is exploring alternative plans to maintain two-directional traffic flow and avoid detours while the work is underway. It is also proposed to complete phases 3 & 4 on two consecutive weekends (depending on the weather and ambient temperature) with full closure of the intersection. This will significantly decrease the duration of the project.
Upon completion, the bridge will have a long-lasting, green polyurethane topcoat that will undoubtedly be more aesthetically pleasing to the neighborhood.
Thank you for your patience as NJ TRANSIT completes this important project.
